🐍 Arisaema tortuosum

This tuber is several years old and as big as they get.

Native to the Himalayas, India, and Myanmar, this species thrives in cool, moist woodland conditions — the kind of shady corner where other exotics might struggle. Despite its exotic looks, it’s surprisingly hardy in the UK if kept well-drained over winter.

☀️ Position

Prefers partial to full shade — perfect for woodland borders, under trees, or alongside ferns and hostas. Avoid strong midday sun, which can scorch the foliage.

🌿 Soil

Enjoys moist but well-drained, humus-rich soil. A mix of loam, leaf mould, and grit works beautifully. Good drainage is essential to prevent the tuber from rotting in winter.

💧 Watering

Keep the soil evenly moist during the growing season (spring to early autumn). Water sparingly in winter when dormant — the tuber should rest in barely damp soil.

🧤 Spacing

Allow 30–40 cm between plants. The tuber multiplies slowly over time, forming small clumps. Ideal for mixing among shade perennials where its form can surprise and delight.

✂️ Maintenance

  • Mulch in late autumn to protect from frost.

  • Allow stems to die back naturally before removing them.

  • Tubers can be lifted and divided in spring if clumps become crowded.

  • Avoid disturbing them too often — they prefer to settle in.
