Corydalis calycosa – A Woodland Whisper in Blue
Delicate, refined, and quietly enchanting, Corydalis calycosa brings a touch of wild mountain beauty to shaded corners of the garden. Its ferny, finely cut foliage forms a soft green cushion, from which clusters of clear blue, tubular flowers appear in spring and early summer — like little drops of sky scattered under the trees.
Native to cool, upland regions of China, this hardy perennial feels most at home in partial shade where the soil stays moist but never waterlogged. It’s a plant that rewards attention to detail — thriving where the microclimate is gentle, the air cool, and the ground rich in leaf mould. Perfect for a woodland border, shady rock garden, or tucked among ferns and hostas for a natural, layered look.
☀️ Position
Prefers partial shade or dappled light. Too much sun can scorch the leaves, while deep shade reduces flowering.
🌿 Soil
Enjoys moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil. Add leaf mould or compost annually to recreate its woodland conditions.
💧 Watering
Keep soil consistently moist, especially in dry spells. Avoid letting it dry out completely — it dislikes drought.
🧤 Spacing
Allow 25–30 cm between plants to let their fine foliage spread naturally.
✂️ Maintenance
Cut back spent flower stems to encourage a light second flush. In summer dormancy, keep the soil just damp. Divide carefully in early spring if clumps become crowded.
