Stipa tenuissima

Stipa tenuissima, also known as Mexican feather grass or pony tail grass, is one of those plants that turns even the simplest garden into something magical. Its fine, hair-like foliage dances with the slightest whisper of wind, creating movement, texture, and a feeling of natural freedom that few plants can match. It’s drought-tolerant, resilient, and practically sculptural when mass planted or used as a contrast to bold-flowered perennials.

🪴 Position:
Full sun is best for strong growth and the best colour. Tolerates light shade, but may get leggy.

🌿 Soil:
Prefers well-drained soil. Avoid heavy clay or sites that stay wet in winter.

💧 Watering:
Low water needs once established. Water occasionally during dry spells in the first season to help roots establish.

🧤 Spacing:
Allow around 30–40 cm between plants if planting in groups. Great for mass planting or mixing into prairie-style schemes.
