This elegant perennial is a standout, thanks to its deep purple-black stems that contrast beautifully with its vibrant violet-blue flower spikes. Blooming from late spring through summer (and often into early autumn with deadheading), ‘Caradonna’ is one of the most eye-catching salvias around.
Salvias have a long history in gardens, with many species originating from the Mediterranean, Central America, and even parts of Asia. ‘Caradonna’ is a cultivar of Salvia nemorosa, a European meadow sage that has been beloved for centuries for its drought tolerance, hardiness, and pollinator appeal. Bred in Germany, ‘Caradonna’ was selected for its intensely dark stems, which give it an almost architectural presence in the garden. Unlike some salvias that can sprawl, this variety maintains a neat, upright habit, making it perfect for borders, gravel gardens, and even containers.
