Imperata cylindrica ‘Rubra’, commonly known as Japanese Blood Grass, is a striking ornamental grass grown for its dramatic foliage rather than its flowers. Fresh green leaves emerge in spring, with the upper portions gradually turning vivid crimson-red as the season progresses, until by late summer and autumn the foliage glows with fiery scarlet tones.
Compact and slow-spreading, this eye-catching grass provides bold contrast in mixed borders, gravel gardens, and contemporary planting schemes. Its upright habit and brilliant autumn colour make it an excellent companion for late-flowering perennials and ornamental grasses.
Unlike the invasive green species, the cultivar ‘Rubra’ is generally well behaved in the garden and spreads only slowly by short rhizomes.
