Plant now to enjoy its striking deep-red foliage from June to October, with the richest colour generally developing from late summer into autumn.

Imperata cylindrica ‘Rubra’ is a compact, deciduous ornamental grass forming upright clumps of green leaves that become increasingly suffused with vivid deep red as the season progresses. Its strong colouring makes it an excellent choice for the front of borders, gravel gardens, containers and contemporary planting schemes.

Highly distinctive and easy to grow, this grass provides dramatic seasonal colour without becoming too large or coarse. It is particularly effective planted alongside green or silver-leaved grasses, where its fiery red foliage creates excellent contrast. The RHS notes that it may produce narrow silvery flower panicles in late summer, although flowering is not its main ornamental feature.
